At Capital One, machine learning and artificial intelligence are important to transforming products, services, and business operations. The company encourages collaboration, inclusion, and iterative delivery while tackling complex challenges.
About The Role
Capital One is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer 3 to help advance AI capabilities and scale machine learning models in production. In this role, you will work across machine learning engineering, data engineering, modeling, and operations. You will partner with Product and Data Science teams to design and deliver solutions to real-world business problems, and help make the infrastructure, deployment, and monitoring decisions needed to operate models reliably at scale. This position is suited to an engineer who can combine strong software development skills with practical knowledge of machine learning systems and production environments.
Responsibilities
Design, build, test, and deliver machine learning models, software components, and applications in collaboration with cross-functional partners. Develop and validate models, automate testing and deployment, and contribute to software supporting large-scale data and machine learning applications. Apply knowledge of modeling techniques, data and feature selection, training, hyperparameter tuning, dimensionality, bias and variance, and validation to inform infrastructure and implementation decisions. Build and optimize data pipelines that prepare and deliver data for model training and inference. Deploy, retrain, maintain, and monitor models in production, using cloud platforms and containerized systems to support scale and reliability. Apply continuous integration and delivery practices, including automated tests, monitoring, and appropriate deployment controls. Maintain well-managed code, contribute to model governance and risk management, and follow Responsible and Explainable AI practices. Work with programming languages such as Python, Scala, or Java, and collaborate within an Agile team.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field, and at least three years of programming experience with Python, Java, Golang, or C++. Candidates must also have at least two years of machine learning experience with frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow and libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, or Scikit-learn; three years of experience using large-scale distributed systems such as Spark or Ray to prepare AI/ML data; and one year of experience deploying and operating production machine learning solutions in the cloud, including experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure and Kubernetes.
Preferred qualifications include a master’s or doctoral degree in a related field; experience optimizing machine learning algorithms and infrastructure; and familiarity with software engineering practices such as source control, code review, testing, and CI/CD. Experience building resilient production services, scalable training data pipelines, and monitoring and incident response processes is valued. Familiarity with machine learning methods, model architectures, training concepts, evaluation, and diagnosing underfitting or overfitting is also preferred. Research publications or co-authored work on a machine learning technique, model, or proof of concept are a plus.
Capital One will not sponsor new employment authorization or provide immigration-related support for this position. The role is expected to accept applications for at least five business days. No agencies, please.
