About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

About The Company
Powell Industries is a manufacturer of engineered electrical equipment and solutions. For more than 75 years, Powell has relied on the expertise, commitment, and creativity of its employees to design, fabricate, and assemble products to meet customer specifications. The company’s “can do” culture encourages teams to solve complex challenges, collaborate across disciplines, and continuously improve how they serve customers. Powell offers opportunities to develop professionally and advance while supporting a sustainable work-life balance.
About The Role
Powell Industries is seeking an Applications Engineer to develop accurate, competitive proposals for electrical equipment projects. In this role, you will review customer requirements, specifications, drawings, and data sheets to assess technical feasibility and determine the scope of Powell’s offering. You will translate conceptual designs into clear proposals, evaluate equipment and services from subcontractors and suppliers, and coordinate with internal teams to shape practical solutions. This position is suited to an early-career engineering professional who is building technical knowledge and can manage project assignments with regular guidance from senior team members.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant discipline is required. Candidates should have 0–2 or more years of experience in electrical equipment estimating, applications engineering, or a related field. The successful candidate will be able to read and interpret electrical specifications and drawings, including single-line and three-line diagrams, elevations, control schematics, site plans, wiring diagrams, and enclosure layouts. Familiarity with low- and medium-voltage distribution equipment, DC and UPS systems, HVAC, pressurization, and interconnect, conduit, and cable schedules is beneficial.
Candidates should be developing a working knowledge of electrical theory and applicable standards, including IEEE/ANSI, NEC, IBC, and NFPA. Strong written and verbal communication, customer focus, sound analytical judgment, and the ability to manage competing priorities are important. You should plan work effectively, use time efficiently, gather and analyze information methodically, and meet deadlines. The role also calls for initiative, adaptability, and the ability to learn new skills and take on responsibilities. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and tools such as Visio, AutoCAD, or Inventor is preferred.
Responsibilities
Review customer-supplied requirements and independently assess whether Powell can manufacture or supply the requested solution. Interpret drawings and technical documents, identify project needs, and develop proposals that accurately define Powell’s scope, assumptions, and offering. Prepare detailed, complete, and cost-competitive proposals, and write clear comments that help customers understand the proposed solution. Work with suppliers and subcontractors to compare proposals, evaluate technical and commercial fit, and identify risks associated with third-party offerings. Collaborate with other Powell divisions to develop solutions across business lines and optimize proposals for both the customer and Powell.
Most of your time will be spent preparing proposals, with occasional participation in customer-facing sales and marketing activities, including meetings and conferences. You may also support cost-reduction initiatives with Engineering and Operations. Assignments are generally simple to average in complexity, are subject to review by senior colleagues, and require regular supervision.
Benefits
Powell offers comprehensive health insurance for employees and their families, a 401(k) savings plan, annual bonus potential, generous paid time off, professional development opportunities, company-sponsored wellness programs, and a collaborative work environment. Employees can pursue advancement and promotion while benefiting from a culture that values both hard work and work-life balance. The position is primarily based in a temperature-controlled office environment, though some outside activities and occasional travel for training or meetings may be required. The work can involve extended computer use, as well as periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
Equal Opportunity
Powell Industries is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes protected veterans and individuals with disabilities. Applicants must be legally authorized to work full time in the United States. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. If you need an accommodation during the hiring process, please contact Powell through its accommodation request process. Application status inquiries cannot be handled through that channel. This description summarizes essential job functions and is not an exhaustive list of all duties, tasks, or responsibilities.
