Director of Engineering

We are looking for an experienced and visionary Director of Engineering to lead the design, development, and scaling of highly available, distributed backend systems. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical leadership skills with deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, Microservices Architecture, and System Design, along with a proven track record of building and leading high-performing engineering teams in product-based organizations. This role requires a balance of strategic thinking, technical excellence, people leadership, and execution capabilities to drive engineering initiatives that directly impact business growth and product innovation.
Responsibilities:
Define and execute the engineering vision, architecture strategy, and technology roadmap.
Lead, mentor, and scale multiple engineering teams while fostering a culture of innovation, ownership, and excellence.
Drive the design and development of scalable, secure, and high-performance backend systems.
Provide technical leadership in architecture reviews, system design discussions, and technology decisions.
Collaborate closely with Product, Business, Architecture, and Leadership teams to align engineering initiatives with business objectives.
Establish engineering best practices, coding standards, development processes, and quality frameworks.
Drive continuous improvements in system reliability, performance, scalability, and observability.
Manage engineering delivery, resource planning, hiring, team development, and succession planning.
Lead large-scale modernization, platform engineering, and cloud transformation initiatives.
Ensure security, compliance, and operational excellence across engineering systems.
Monitor engineering KPIs and drive continuous improvement in productivity and delivery efficiency.
Requirements:
Strong hands-on experience in Java.
Extensive expertise in Spring Boot.
Deep understanding of Microservices Architecture.
Strong background in System Design and Distributed Systems.
Experience building highly scalable, fault-tolerant, and cloud-native applications.
Expertise in REST APIs, event-driven architecture, and asynchronous systems.
Strong understanding of database design (SQL and NoSQL).
Experience with caching, messaging systems, and performance optimization.
Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and containerized deployments.
Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Leadership and Management:
Proven experience leading engineering teams of 30+ members through Engineering Managers and Tech Leads.
Strong stakeholder management and executive communication skills.
Experience driving organizational scaling, engineering transformation, and process improvements.
Demonstrated success in hiring, mentoring, and retaining top engineering talent.
Ability to balance technical excellence with business priorities and delivery commitments.
Preferred Background:
12-17 years of overall software engineering experience.
Significant experience in engineering leadership roles such as Engineering Manager, Senior Engineering Manager, Head of Engineering, or Director of Engineering.
Mandatory experience in product-based organizations.
Experience building large-scale consumer internet, SaaS, fintech, e-commerce, logistics, or enterprise platforms preferred.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
