Senior Engineering Manager (Backend)

We are looking for a highly driven and experienced Senior Engineering Manager - Java Backend to lead high-performing engineering teams building scalable, resilient, and customer-centric platforms for a fast-paced D2C/B2C environment. This role requires a strong technology leader with deep backend engineering expertise, people management experience, and a proven track record of delivering large-scale consumer-facing products. You will work closely with Product, Business, Architecture, DevOps, and Data teams to build highly available systems that power customer experiences at scale.
Responsibilities:
Lead and manage multiple backend engineering teams focused on Java-based distributed systems and microservices.
Drive architecture, design, scalability, reliability, and performance improvements across consumer-facing platforms.
Collaborate with Product Managers and business stakeholders to define engineering roadmaps and execution priorities.
Mentor and grow engineering managers, team leads, and senior engineers.
Establish engineering best practices around coding standards, testing, CI/CD, observability, and security.
Own end-to-end delivery of backend systems with high availability, fault tolerance, and scalability.
Drive modernization initiatives including cloud-native architecture and platform optimization.
Ensure strong engineering execution with agile methodologies, sprint planning, estimation, and release management.
Build a culture of innovation, accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement.
Work closely with DevOps and SRE teams to improve deployment pipelines and production stability.
Manage stakeholder communication and provide regular updates on engineering deliverables and risks.
Participate in hiring, workforce planning, performance management, and team development.
Requirements:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
10-15+ years of software engineering experience with at least 4-6 years in engineering leadership/people management roles.
Strong hands-on experience in Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservices architecture.
Proven experience building and scaling high-traffic D2C/B2C platforms.
Deep understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architecture, caching, and database optimization.
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
Strong knowledge of Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices.
Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases.
Familiarity with Kafka, Redis, Elasticsearch, and messaging systems.
Strong understanding of system design, scalability, security, and performance engineering.
Excellent stakeholder management and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in eCommerce, retail-tech, fintech, consumer-tech, or high-growth startup ecosystems.
Exposure to AI-driven platforms, recommendation systems, or personalization engines.
Experience managing globally distributed teams.
Strong understanding of observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog, or New Relic.
Tech Stack: Java 11/17 Spring Boot, Microservices Architecture, Kafka, Redis, MySQL/PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Docker and Kubernetes, AWS/GCP, CI/CD Pipelines, REST and Event-Driven Systems.
