Senior Engineering Manager - Backend + Mobile

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Engineering Manager to lead the design, development, and delivery of large-scale backend platforms and mobile applications. This role requires a strong technical leader with deep hands-on expertise in highly scalable distributed systems, mobile application development, and engineering team management. The ideal candidate will combine architectural excellence, people leadership, and execution rigor to build world-class products and engineering organizations.
The core responsibilities for the job include the following:
Engineering Leadership:
Lead, mentor, and grow multiple engineering teams across backend and mobile development.
Define engineering strategy, technical roadmap, and execution plans aligned with business objectives.
Drive engineering excellence through best practices, code quality standards, architectural reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Foster a culture of innovation, ownership, collaboration, and high performance.
Build succession plans and develop future technical leaders within the organization.
Backend Platform Ownership:
Architect and oversee the development of highly scalable, resilient, and secure backend services capable of handling millions of transactions and users.
Drive microservices architecture, distributed systems design, API strategy, event-driven architectures, and cloud-native solutions.
Establish performance, reliability, observability, and scalability standards.
Lead technical decisions involving databases, caching, messaging systems, and infrastructure optimization.
Ensure system availability, disaster recovery, and operational excellence.
Mobile Engineering Leadership:
Lead mobile engineering initiatives across Android and iOS platforms.
Define mobile architecture, development standards, release processes, and performance optimization strategies.
Collaborate with product, design, and backend teams to deliver seamless user experiences.
Drive adoption of modern mobile development frameworks, testing practices, and CI/CD pipelines.
Ensure mobile applications meet security, performance, accessibility, and quality benchmarks.
Delivery & Stakeholder Management:
Partner closely with Product, Design, Data, DevOps, and Business stakeholders to deliver strategic initiatives.
Own project planning, resource allocation, risk management, and execution tracking.
Manage multiple concurrent programs while ensuring timely and high-quality delivery.
Communicate technical strategies, trade-offs, and project updates to senior leadership.
Operational Excellence:
Define and monitor engineering KPIs, including availability, latency, deployment frequency, MTTR, and quality metrics.
Drive incident management, root cause analysis, and continuous reliability improvements.
Establish strong engineering processes around Agile methodologies, sprint planning, and release management.
Requirements:
Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
12+ years of software engineering experience with significant hands-on development background.
5+ years of engineering management experience leading medium to large engineering teams.
Proven experience building and operating highly scalable backend systems handling large-scale traffic and transactions.
Strong experience designing distributed systems, microservices, RESTful APIs, and cloud-native architectures.
Deep understanding of backend technologies such as Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, Node.js, or similar enterprise-grade stacks.
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
Strong expertise in database technologies, including SQL and NoSQL systems.
Deep understanding of Android and iOS application architecture, development lifecycle, performance optimization, and release management.
Experience leading cross-functional engineering teams in fast-paced product environments.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience managing teams of 15-50+ engineers across multiple functions.
Experience scaling consumer internet, fintech, e-commerce, SaaS, or platform products.
Strong knowledge of Kubernetes, Docker, Infrastructure as Code, and DevOps practices.
Experience with event streaming platforms such as Kafka and real-time data processing systems.
Familiarity with modern mobile frameworks, including Flutter or React Native.
Experience driving engineering transformation, platform modernization, or cloud migration initiatives.
Exposure to AI/ML-powered products and data-intensive platforms is a plus.
