About The Role
We are seeking a dynamic and strategic Human Resources Manager to join our team at Safeway. In this role, you will be instrumental in shaping the company’s culture, driving talent development initiatives, and ensuring the delivery of a superior associate experience. You will partner closely with business leaders and HR colleagues nationwide to implement strategies that support organizational growth, enhance employee engagement, and promote diversity and inclusion. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in HR practices, with a focus on performance management, change management, and talent acquisition, especially within a retail environment. This position offers an exciting opportunity to influence organizational success while working in a fast-paced, evolving setting that values innovation, collaboration, and service excellence.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, labor law, or a related field; a master’s degree or MBA is preferred. A minimum of 3-5 years of HR experience is required, with demonstrated expertise in areas such as culture development, performance management, talent acquisition, employee relations, investigations, compensation, and benefits. Experience supporting retail operations across multiple locations or states is highly desirable. Candidates should possess strong business acumen, excellent communication skills, and the ability to influence at all levels of the organization. Proven experience in leading projects without direct authority, driving change, and leveraging data for decision-making will be key to success in this role. Additionally, candidates must be willing to travel 5-10% as needed.
Responsibilities
As a Human Resources Manager at Safeway, your core responsibilities will include cultivating a positive and inclusive organizational culture that enhances the associate experience. You will lead initiatives related to diversity and inclusion, talent management, employee engagement, training, compensation, and compliance. Your role involves executing strategic HR programs aligned with corporate objectives, supporting organizational change efforts, and providing guidance on change management and organizational design. You will participate in strategic planning sessions, identify skill and resource gaps, and develop solutions to meet business challenges. Facilitating talent reviews, coaching leaders on people-related matters, and supporting succession planning are vital components of your role.
You will actively participate in the recruitment process, especially for key leadership roles, ensuring diversity objectives are met. Partnering with business leaders, you will align talent strategies with operational goals, ensuring the effective management of the entire talent lifecycle. You will also oversee compliance with employment laws and regulations, conduct internal investigations, and collaborate with legal and asset protection teams when necessary. Additionally, you will coordinate with Learning & Development to deliver impactful training programs and develop strategies to meet evolving organizational needs. Managing policies related to compensation, benefits, and employee relations will be essential to maintaining a compliant and supportive work environment.
