About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
Director of Asset Management ($140,000 – $175,000 base + bonus)
📍 Remote (US) — travel for borrower site visits, roughly two days a month
About the Opportunity
An established mission-driven lender with a national portfolio of real estate loans, credit enhancements, and equity investments. The organization is growing, expanding into new markets, and building out its finance function under new leadership.
Why This Role Is Exciting
Genuinely greenfield — nobody has owned this portfolio closely in a while. You build the asset management function rather than inherit someone else's
A clear mandate from the CFO — shift the organization from reviewing borrower reporting once a year to real, proactive portfolio management
Visible seat — report directly to the CFO and present portfolio performance, emerging risks, and mitigation strategies to executive leadership and the Board
Mission-driven lending — your credit work has a direct community impact
Remote-first, national team — with genuinely generous benefits that people stay for
What You'll Do
Own borrower relationships across 30–40 investments spanning real estate, loans, and guarantees — visit borrowers on site, meet with leadership, and get ahead of issues
Run credit analysis and the internal risk rating framework, flagging material credit events early
Work out underperforming assets: modifications, restructurings, waivers, and debt refinancing
Monitor borrower reporting, covenants, and financials against underwriting expectations
Build portfolio dashboards and early-warning indicators, using automation and AI where it helps
Note: this is credit and borrower relationship work, not property-level accounting or budgeting
What You Bring
CDFI or community development lending background
7+ years in commercial lending, portfolio management, CDFI lending, or commercial real estate asset management
Credit analysis and lending-side experience including loan modifications, covenant compliance, and workouts
A consultative, softer touch with borrowers — mission-oriented organizations, not typical commercial counterparties
A proactive operator's instinct: you get ahead of problems and help borrowers find solutions
Willingness to travel for site visits, roughly a couple a month
Work arrangement
No
