Sr. Accountant

We are looking for an experienced Sr. Accountant to support core accounting functions for a nonprofit organization in Seattle, Washington. This Long-term Contract position will play a key role in financial reporting, grant-related accounting, and month-end and year-end close activities while helping maintain strong compliance and internal control practices. The ideal candidate brings deep general ledger experience, strong analytical judgment, and the ability to communicate financial information clearly across teams.
Responsibilities:
• Direct daily accounting activities and act as a senior resource for complex transactions, reporting questions, and financial issue resolution.
• Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including preparing journal entries, recording accruals, posting allocations, and completing reconciliations on schedule.
• Maintain the general ledger and supporting schedules by reviewing account activity, researching variances, and ensuring balances are accurate and well documented.
• Prepare financial statements, board-level reporting materials, and related analyses that support leadership decision-making.
• Administer accounting for restricted, private, state, and federal funding by tracking revenue and expenses and verifying compliance with funding requirements.
• Partner with grants and operational teams to review coding, confirm documentation, reconcile grant activity, and resolve discrepancies or allowability concerns.
• Oversee key transaction cycles such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, banking, and credit card activity, including review of related reconciliations and entries.
• Support annual audit and Single Audit preparation by assembling schedules, organizing backup documentation, and assisting with regulatory filings such as Form 990 and state reports.
• Strengthen finance operations by refining procedures, improving documentation, enhancing internal controls, and supporting system and process improvements tied to reporting needs.
• Monitor cash activity and contribute to cash flow planning while explaining accounting concepts and financial results to non-finance stakeholders.
• Strong senior-level accounting experience with ownership of month-end close, general ledger activity, and financial statement preparation.
• Hands-on expertise with journal entries, account reconciliations, and bank reconciliations in a deadline-driven environment.
• Background in nonprofit accounting, including experience with restricted funds and grant-related financial tracking.
• Familiarity with audit support, internal controls, and compliance reporting, including exposure to Single Audit or similar regulatory reviews.
• Working knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processes, with the ability to identify and resolve discrepancies.
• Proficiency with Sage Intacct and strong overall financial systems skills.
• Ability to analyze financial data, investigate issues thoroughly, and communicate findings clearly to both finance and non-finance teams.
