About the role
We are looking for a SQL DBA and Data Transformation Expert who is equally at home tuning a production database and reasoning about what the data inside it actually means. This is a hybrid role. Half of it is data engineering and analysis: mapping the MaxiCare data model to the schemas of third party systems, transforming data faithfully as it moves in and out of the platform, and turning that data into reporting that operators and our own leadership can act on. The other half is database administration: owning the performance, security, and stability of our databases in AWS and of the database layers inside the MaxiCare applications.
Every facility that adopts MaxiCare arrives with history in another EMR, and every facility depends on a web of outside systems: pharmacies, labs, billing clearinghouses, payers, state and federal reporting programs, and analytics vendors. Each speaks its own schema. You will understand both sides of every one of those conversations, build the mappings and transformations that let data cross the boundary without losing meaning, and prove with evidence that what arrived matches what left.
This is a hands on role. You will write the SQL, build and run the pipelines, read the execution plans, set the backup policies, and get paged when a migration goes sideways. You will also sit with product and operations to figure out which numbers matter to a facility administrator and build the reporting that puts those numbers in front of them.
What you will own
Schema mapping and data integration. You map the MaxiCare data model to the schemas of third party EMRs, pharmacy and lab systems, billing clearinghouses, payer feeds, and regulatory reporting programs. You document every mapping, assumption, and edge case, and keep them current as both sides change.
Data transformation and migration. You design and build the ETL and ELT pipelines that move data into, out of, and between systems, including facility onboarding migrations from legacy EMRs. Code set translation, unit normalization, identity matching, deduplication, and the messy realities of clinical and billing data. You validate and reconcile every load so the receiving side can trust it.
Analytics and reporting. Census, billing and revenue cycle, clinical quality measures, staffing, and product usage. You build the data models and reporting layers behind those views and partner with product to decide what ships inside the EMR versus what stays internal.
Database performance. Indexing strategy, execution plan analysis, query rewrites, partitioning, connection pooling, caching decisions, and capacity planning. When something is slow, you find out why and fix it at the right layer.
Database security and compliance. Access control, encryption at rest and in transit, secrets handling, audit logging, and least privilege across every database we run. MaxiCare handles protected health information, and the database is where it lives. HIPAA is a design constraint on everything you build.
Stability, backup, and recovery. Backup policy, point in time recovery, replication, failover, and disaster recovery testing. You define recovery objectives with engineering and prove, on a schedule, that we can meet them. You monitor database health, set the alerts, and respond when they fire.
Schema governance and change management. You set the standards for how schema changes are designed, reviewed, versioned, and deployed. You review engineering migrations before they reach production and keep the data model coherent as the product grows.
Documentation. You maintain the data dictionary, integration mappings, runbooks, and architecture documentation in Confluence so the next person understands what they are looking at.
What we are looking for
Experience. Seven or more years with relational databases in production, including at least three years of direct database administration and at least three years building data integration, transformation, or migration pipelines. Those years can overlap.
SQL depth. Expert level SQL. You write complex analytical queries without reaching for a tool, read execution plans fluently, and know how to make a slow query fast and a fragile schema durable. Deep PostgreSQL experience is strongly preferred. SQL Server, MySQL, or Oracle is useful, since legacy EMR migrations will put you in front of all of them.
AWS database services. Production experience administering Amazon RDS and Aurora, plus the surrounding services that matter to a DBA: IAM, KMS, CloudWatch, Secrets Manager, S3, and the networking model that governs who can reach the database.
Data transformation tooling. Experience with AWS Glue, dbt, Apache Airflow, or equivalent, and with scripting the parts those tools do not cover, typically in Python.
Data modeling. Relational and dimensional modeling, normalization and when to break it, and the tradeoffs between transactional and analytical schemas.
Analysis and reporting. You can take a business question, find the data that answers it, and present the answer in a form an operator without a technical background can use. Experience with Amazon QuickSight, Metabase, Power BI, or Tableau.
Security posture. Working knowledge of database security practices and of HIPAA requirements for data at rest, in transit, and in use. You understand why audit logs matter.
Operational discipline. You have run backups you later had to restore from. You have tested failover before you needed it. You monitor rather than hope.
Translation skills. You can sit between an engineer, a product manager, and a facility billing lead and keep all three in the same conversation. You write clearly and document without being asked.
Atlassian fluency. Tracking work in Jira and maintaining technical documentation in Confluence.
AI tool fluency. Daily use of AI tools, Anthropic Claude in particular. We use AI throughout our process, and you should be working with it, not around it.
Education. A four year degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field from an accredited institution, or equivalent practical experience.
Authorization. Authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Preferred
Healthcare data and interoperability standards, including HL7 v2, FHIR, CCD and Consolidated CDA, X12 837 and 835, NCPDP, and the MDS 3.0 data set used in skilled nursing.
Prior EMR or EHR data migration work, especially from legacy long term care systems such as PointClickCare, MatrixCare, or American HealthTech.
Clinical and billing code sets: ICD 10, CPT, HCPCS, LOINC, SNOMED CT, RxNorm, and NDC.
AWS certifications such as Database Specialty, Solutions Architect, or Data Engineer.
Experience in an early stage company where you were the only database person in the room.
Exposure to NoSQL or document stores and to streaming or event based data movement.
Logistics
Location. Onsite in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Remote work is possible during the transition to Brookfield if required, with full office presence expected once the transition is complete.
On call. You share on call responsibility for production databases with the engineering and systems administration team. Rotations are scheduled and reasonable, but databases do not keep business hours.
Travel. Occasional. Facility migrations sometimes go better with someone on site when a facility goes live, and some trips will come up on short notice.
Camera on policy. Any video call requires the camera to be on. That applies to internal meetings, customer calls, training sessions, and stakeholder reviews.
Reporting structure. Reports directly to the Product Architect. Partners closely with engineering, the Senior AWS Systems Administrator, product management, and operations.
Employment type. Full time, exempt.
Compensation
Competitive base compensation calibrated to the experience you bring and the market in your jurisdiction, plus the opportunity for an annual performance bonus tied to individual and company results. Specifics are discussed during the interview process.
