VOLUNTEER FOUNDING INDEPENDENT BOARD DIRECTOR

Role Description The Volunteer Founding Independent Board Director will help establish and guide the governance and strategic direction of Safe Haven Animal Network. This is a volunteer, remote role focused on board-level responsibilities rather than day-to-day operations. Key activities include participating in regular board meetings, contributing to the development of bylaws, policies, and ethical standards, and helping set short- and long-term organizational goals. The Director will review and approve budgets, support fundraising and outreach efforts, and help ensure legal and regulatory compliance for a nonprofit organization. The role also involves collaborating with other board members to evaluate program effectiveness, manage organizational risk, and serve as an ambassador for the mission in professional and community networks.
Qualifications
Experience or strong interest in nonprofit governance, including participation in boards, advisory groups, or similar leadership bodies.
Knowledge of or commitment to animal welfare, rescue, shelter operations, or related community services.
Skills in strategic planning, organizational development, and setting measurable goals and priorities.
Basic understanding of nonprofit finance, budgeting, and resource stewardship; ability to review and interpret financial information.
Experience with fundraising, donor relations, grant research, or community outreach is highly beneficial.
Strong communication skills, including the ability to collaborate remotely, listen actively, and contribute to constructive board discussions.
High ethical standards, independent judgment, and willingness to ask critical questions in the best interest of the organization and its mission.
Comfort with remote work tools (video conferencing, shared documents, email) and reliable access to the internet.
Prior experience in leadership, management, law, finance, marketing, or operations is a plus but not required.
Ability to commit consistent time for board meetings, committee work, and preparation of materials on a volunteer basis.
