VOLUNTEER FOUNDING BOARD TREASURER
Safe Haven Animal Network

Safe Haven Animal Network is seeking a dependable, ethical and community-minded individual to serve as our founding Board Treasurer.
Safe Haven Animal Network is a startup animal-welfare organization preparing to incorporate as an Arizona nonprofit and apply for federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Our mission is to build a network connecting animals and families with fosters, rescues, adoption opportunities, veterinary and hardship assistance, lost-and-found services, education, animal-cruelty resources and trusted community partners.
POSITION STATUS
This is an unpaid volunteer Board position. Safe Haven Animal Network is currently in its pre-incorporation and pre-funding stage. Board service does not constitute employment or guarantee future paid employment.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Board Treasurer will:
Help the Board establish responsible financial policies and internal controls.
Assist with developing and reviewing organizational budgets.
Review financial reports and explain them clearly to the Board.
Monitor income, expenses, donations, grants and restricted funds.
Help ensure organizational funds are properly documented and used for approved charitable purposes.
Work with the President and Board to establish appropriate banking procedures.
Help ensure that no one person has unchecked control over organizational funds.
Monitor required financial and tax-filing deadlines.
Assist with grant budgets and financial reporting when needed.
Present regular financial updates at Board meetings.
Help maintain accurate, complete and confidential financial records.
Support the selection and oversight of a qualified bookkeeper, accountant or other financial professional as funding permits.
Participate in Board discussions, decisions and votes.
Act in the best interests of Safe Haven Animal Network and the animals and communities it will serve.
The Treasurer provides financial oversight but will not be expected to personally perform every bookkeeping, accounting or tax function.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
We welcome applicants with experience in one or more of the following:
Accounting or bookkeeping
Banking or financial services
Budget preparation
Financial management
Nonprofit finance
Grant financial reporting
Internal controls
Business administration
Tax preparation or auditing
A CPA license or accounting degree is helpful but not required. Practical financial experience, sound judgment, integrity and reliability are especially important.
BOARD MEMBER EXPECTATIONS
The selected candidate must be willing to:
Attend scheduled Board meetings, primarily by video conference.
Review reports and meeting materials in advance.
Maintain confidentiality.
Disclose actual or potential conflicts of interest.
Exercise independent judgment.
Follow Safe Haven’s bylaws and Board-approved policies.
Participate in organizational planning and oversight.
Complete an application, interview, reference checks and an appropriate background check with written consent.
Make a good-faith commitment to serve for at least one year, subject to the bylaws adopted by the Board.
INDEPENDENCE
Safe Haven is particularly interested in an independent Treasurer who is not related to the Founder, is not employed by the Founder and does not have a financial relationship that could interfere with objective Board decision-making.
No personal financial contribution is required to serve on the Board.
