Brief Description
About the Role
The Concepting and Estimating Engineer develops material handling system concepts, designs, and project estimates for new and existing customer facilities. This role combines engineering creativity with commercial problem-solving, translating customer requirements, operational data, and facility constraints into innovative automation solutions. Working closely with internal teams and external partners, the engineer creates system layouts, evaluates technologies, develops project budgets, and helps deliver winning proposals that drive customer success.
Location
Flexible. This role can be based remotely or in a hybrid arrangement from Louisville, KY; Memphis, TN; or Mason, OH, depending on the candidate and team needs.
Salary
Final compensation will be determined based on a candidate's experience, skills, and qualifications demonstrated throughout the interview process.
Travel
Up to 15% travel as needed for customer meetings and site evaluations.

What You'll Do
Create conceptual layouts, system designs, and preliminary mechanical solutions for automated material handling systems.
Analyze customer operations, material flows, bid documents, specifications, and facility constraints to develop effective solutions.
Collaborate with sales, electrical engineering, controls engineering, and solutions development teams to solve customer challenges and create system concepts.
Participate in solution development from a "blank sheet of paper" concept stage through proposal delivery.
Create material handling and sortation system layouts using 2D and 3D CAD software.
Perform equipment selection and conceptual mechanical design activities.
Travel to customer facilities to conduct site surveys and gather project requirements.
Develop budgetary estimates, equipment costs, integration costs, and technical assumptions for proposed solutions.
Collaborate with vendors, suppliers, and other stakeholders to obtain technical information and pricing required for solution development.
Identify project risks, scope gaps, assumptions, and value-engineering opportunities.
Support proposal development and project handoff activities through the creation of engineering documentation, RFQs, functional design documents, and technical deliverables.
Requirements
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline
5+ years of experience in material handling, automation, manufacturing, or related engineering environments
Experience developing layouts and conceptual system designs
Proficiency with AutoCAD, Autodesk products, or similar design software
Strong understanding of conveyor systems, sortation systems, robotics, or warehouse automation technologies
Ability to analyze operational requirements and translate them into practical engineering solutions
Strong communication and presentation skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
Experience in intralogistics, warehouse automation, parcel, or distribution industries preferred
Simulation experience is a plus.
