2. About the Opportunity:
The Senior UNIX System Engineer role is critical in supporting and maintaining a mixed environment of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Enterprise Linux, and Solaris UNIX systems. This position ensures the reliability and security of servers in a complex customer environment, contributing to mission-critical Army IT services across enterprise data centers and cloud-hosted platforms. The role involves system deployment, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and security hardening, directly impacting the efficiency and stability of IT infrastructure.
3. Responsibilities:
Manage, maintain, deploy, troubleshoot, and support servers in a mixed Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Enterprise Linux, and Solaris UNIX environment.
Plan, execute, and implement new system hardware and software.
Create and maintain technical instructions, operating procedures, and policies.
Monitor and tune system performance; harden servers and report on security and operational status.
Recommend and implement enterprise improvements and manage new software/hardware integrations.
Produce utilization reports to identify problems and corrective actions.
Support lifecycle management of mixed vendor equipment, including firmware control and preventive maintenance.
Recommend and implement technologies to expand, upgrade, and increase environment efficiency.
4. Requirements:
CompTIA Security+ certification.
Bachelor''s degree in Computer Science or related field preferred; equivalent hands-on experience considered.
Experience in Computer Science or IT.
Computing Environment Certification (e.g., RedHat), with possible waiver for 30 days after project start.
Active DoD Secret Security Clearance.
Minimum five years as UNIX Systems Administrator or IT Engineer with automation experience.
Minimum three years in patch management applying security updates via YUM and RPM.
Minimum three years working in complex network environments, including VLANs and system hardening.
Minimum three years managing local user accounts via command line.
Minimum three years creating and following Standard Operating Procedures for processes and disaster recovery.
Minimum three years configuring and maintaining DNS, SFTP, SMTP, and NTP services.
Strong interpersonal skills and team orientation.
Preferred:
Bachelor''s degree or equivalent experience.
Four or more years’ experience with SELinux management.
Experience with Cybersecurity patch management and compliance frameworks such as STIG, SRG, RMF, SCA-V, and CORA.
Experience deploying large-scale hardware/software upgrades across distributed sites.
Familiarity with current and emerging network and infrastructure management technologies.
Certifications:
CompTIA Security+, RedHat Computing Environment Certification
5. Pay Range and Compensation Package:
Pay Band MinUSD $96,050.00/Yr.
Pay Band MaxUSD $148,670.00/Yr.
