Controller

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Controller based in Canada.
As the first finance hire, you’ll have a broad mandate to establish and lead the company’s core finance function as the business scales.
You’ll own financial reporting, accounting operations, budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling across a growing international organization.
The role combines hands-on accounting leadership with strategic financial planning and close partnership with operational and commercial teams.
You’ll help translate hiring plans, customer deployments, pricing decisions, and spending into clear financial implications and recommendations.
You’ll also oversee multi-entity accounting across the US, Canada, and UK, including consolidation, foreign currency, intercompany transactions, and revenue recognition.
With significant ownership and autonomy, you’ll shape finance processes, systems, controls, and automation from the ground up.

Accountabilities
Own monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting and ensure financial statements are prepared accurately in accordance with US GAAP.
Manage accounting across multiple entities, including consolidation, foreign currency accounting, and intercompany transactions for US, Canadian, and UK operations.
Own revenue recognition processes, including compliance with ASC 606.
Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable and establish practical financial controls and processes.
Coordinate tax compliance, audit preparation, and related activities with external accounting and tax advisers.
Own the annual budgeting process, rolling forecasts, and the company’s financial model in collaboration with department leaders.
Connect hiring plans, customer deployments, operating expenses, and other business priorities to financial forecasts and recommendations.
Maintain short- and long-term cash forecasts, including working capital, capital expenditure, and financing requirements.
Analyze customer and deployment economics, pricing strategies, expansion scenarios, and other key business drivers.
Improve accounting and financial planning systems, including evaluating and implementing an ERP where appropriate.
Use automation and AI-enabled finance tools to reduce manual processes while maintaining strong controls, review procedures, and data reliability.
Support the evaluation of debt, equipment financing, and other potential funding solutions.
Prepare financial diligence materials and support fundraising activities in collaboration with leadership and external advisers.
Provide clear financial insights and recommendations to leadership to support commercial and operational decision-making.
Requirements
8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including ownership of financial close and reporting within a growing organization.
CPA designation or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
Strong knowledge of US GAAP, including practical experience with ASC 606 revenue recognition.
Demonstrated experience operating independently within a lean finance organization or acting as the primary accounting owner.
Proven ability to build finance processes and controls while remaining comfortable executing hands-on accounting work.
Strong experience owning budgets, cash forecasts, financial models, and variance analysis.
Ability to translate operational assumptions and business plans into financial implications, scenarios, and actionable recommendations.
Experience managing multi-entity accounting and cross-border operations, including US financial reporting and coordination with external tax advisers.
Strong spreadsheet, financial modeling, accounting system, and financial technology skills.
Sound financial judgment, attention to detail, and ability to identify and resolve complex accounting and business issues.
Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work closely with leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
Experience working in a fast-growing environment where processes and systems are still being established.
Experience in a venture-backed company is preferred, particularly within robotics, hardware, industrial automation, logistics, or related technology sectors.
Experience with inventory, hardware businesses, or robotics-as-a-service models is advantageous.
Experience implementing an ERP and working with modern finance and automation tools is preferred.
Experience supporting equity fundraising, debt facilities, equipment financing, or financial due diligence is a plus.
Benefits
Fully remote position based in Canada, with the role located within the Toronto market.
CA$250,000–CA$300,000 annual compensation range, plus equity.
