About An Arm and a Leg
An Arm and a Leg reports on the cost of health care in the United States, from surprise medical bills to insurance denials to debt collectors chasing unpaid claims. The reporting aims to be entertaining, empowering and useful, work that shows people what they are up against and what they can do about it. Dan Weissmann created the show in 2018. The podcast is co-produced with KFF Health News and distributed in partnership with KUOW.
Episodes have been downloaded more than 3.75 million times. The show has drawn coverage from The New York Times, NPR and other national outlets. It has picked up multiple national journalism awards. Congressional staff and state commissions use the reporting. Law schools, social work programs and medical schools assign it as coursework. A nonprofit that has canceled $170 million in medical debt credits the show with fueling its growth. And listeners email the team every week to say An Arm and a Leg’s work helped them fight a medical bill, get an insurance company to cover care or simply feel less alone.
Listener donations are the organization's biggest source of funding. The team is small and works remotely from Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. Anchored by a full-time host/reporter/executive producer and a three-fourths time senior producer, it includes fractional teammates in editing, audio engineering and operations roles. This new role adds dedicated fundraising and revenue capacity to that team.
Position Summary
An Arm and a Leg is hiring a Revenue Associate to help build and run its donor stewardship and fundraising program.
The show has a fundraising list of donors with capacity who need stewarding. That is where you come in. You keep donors connected to the work through the year with notes, calls, updates and thank-yous, and you keep good records of those conversations. When first-time donors appear, you use wealth-screening tools to identify candidates for development and stewardship. When a donor looks ready for a larger conversation, you bring in the host or the operations manager and help them prepare. You are not making the big asks. You are setting them up.
The other side of the role is social media. An Arm and a Leg has a deep library of reporting and free toolkits —but little social presence pointing people toward these resources. You help build that presence over time. People find the work, use the toolkits and support the show, some of them without ever listening to an episode.

Major donor cultivation and membership program development, including donor phone calls and timely, personal thank-yous and acknowledgments.

Social Media and Social Advertising
