Role Overview
We are looking for a Team Leader – Indian Payroll Compliance who will be responsible for managing a team handling Indian payroll statutory compliance activities, resolving employee/client queries, ensuring timely compliance deliverables, and providing technical guidance on payroll and labour-law matters.
The ideal candidate should have strong practical knowledge of Indian payroll compliance, combined with the ability to manage a team, handle escalations, and communicate effectively with clients and internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
1. Team Management
Manage and supervise a team responsible for Indian payroll compliance activities.
Allocate work, monitor workloads, and ensure timely completion of compliance deliverables.
Review team performance and provide regular guidance and feedback.
Conduct knowledge-sharing and training sessions for team members.
Ensure appropriate maker-checker / quality-control processes are followed.
2. Indian Payroll Compliance
Handle and review statutory payroll compliance including:
Provident Fund (PF/EPF)
ESI
Professional Tax (PT)
Labour Welfare Fund (LWF)
Gratuity and other applicable statutory requirements
Shops & Establishments requirements
Other applicable state-specific payroll compliances
Keep the team updated on changes in Indian payroll and labour legislation.
Interpret statutory requirements and provide practical guidance to the payroll team and clients.
Identify compliance risks and ensure appropriate corrective actions.
3. Query Handling & Escalation Management
Handle payroll compliance queries raised by clients, employees, and internal teams.
Investigate complex payroll and statutory compliance issues and provide appropriate resolutions.
Act as the escalation point for the team for technical and compliance-related queries.
Ensure queries are responded to accurately and within agreed timelines.
Maintain proper documentation of complex queries and resolutions.
4. Client Management
Participate in client calls and discussions relating to payroll compliance.
Explain statutory requirements and payroll compliance implications to clients in a clear and practical manner.
Coordinate with payroll processing, HR, finance, and other internal teams to resolve client issues.
Build strong professional relationships with clients and ensure high service standards.
5. Compliance Review & Quality Control
Review statutory calculations, reports, challans, returns, and compliance trackers prepared by the team.
Identify errors or gaps before submission/payment.
Ensure compliance activities are completed within statutory deadlines.
Support internal and client audits by providing required payroll compliance information and documentation.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in Indian payroll and statutory compliance.
Strong practical knowledge of Indian payroll compliance and statutory requirements.
Prior experience in team handling / team leadership.
Strong query-handling and problem-solving skills.
Ability to independently handle complex payroll compliance matters.
Good understanding of state-specific payroll compliances.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Good client-handling and stakeholder-management skills.
Ability to work under strict deadlines and manage multiple clients/tasks simultaneously.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Good working knowledge of MS Excel and payroll/compliance systems.
Preferred Experience
Candidates with experience in payroll outsourcing / payroll processing companies, handling multiple clients, and managing statutory compliance for different states will be preferred.
