Chief Operating Officer

Company Description The Stanford Translational AI (STAI) Lab advances artificial intelligence from foundational research to real-world impact in health and medicine. The Lab brings together interdisciplinary experts in AI, computer vision, neuroscience, medical imaging, and health informatics to tackle critical challenges in precision healthcare and mental health. STAI focuses on developing innovative AI methods that can be deployed in clinical settings to improve diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes. Team members collaborate closely with clinicians, researchers, and industry partners to ensure that solutions are practical, ethical, and aligned with patient needs.
Role Description The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a full-time, remote role responsible for overseeing the operational, financial, and strategic functions of the STAI Lab. The COO will manage day-to-day operations, including resource planning, process optimization, and coordination across research, engineering, and clinical collaboration teams. This role will lead annual and multi-year business planning, support grant and partnership development, and ensure effective budgeting, financial tracking, and compliance. The COO will implement operational frameworks, track performance metrics, and support hiring, onboarding, and team development to maintain a high-performing, inclusive environment. The role will also involve working closely with lab leadership to prioritize initiatives, manage stakeholder relationships, and align operations with STAI’s mission and long-term goals.
Qualifications
Strong skills in Business Planning and strategic operations, including experience developing and executing long-term organizational plans.
Proficiency in Operations Management, with a track record of optimizing processes, managing complex projects, and coordinating cross-functional teams.
Advanced Analytical Skills to interpret data, build dashboards, and support evidence-based decision-making for research and operational priorities.
Experience in Finance and Budgeting, including managing budgets, forecasting, resource allocation, and financial reporting.
Relevant leadership experience in a research, healthcare, technology, or academic environment; familiarity with AI, data science, or digital health is beneficial.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and global remote teams.
Demonstrated commitment to inclusive, ethical practices and to advancing equitable healthcare outcomes through technology.
Advanced degree in business, public administration, health administration, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
