Chief Accounting Officer (CAO)
Position overview
The chief accounting officer is responsible for leading the company's overall accounting function, financial reporting, accounting policies, internal controls and financial compliance.
This position typically reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and is an important member of the company's senior financial management team. It is responsible for ensuring that financial information is accurate, complete and timely, and establishing an accounting management system that complies with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
Main responsibilities
1. Corporate accounting management
Overall responsible for the company's accounting functions and accounting operations.
Oversee the general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets and other accounting operations.
Establish a unified and efficient accounting management process.
Ensure that the accounting work of each business unit and subsidiary complies with company standards.
2. Financial reporting
Responsible for monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting processes.
Supervise the preparation of financial statements such as balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
Ensure financial reporting is accurate, timely and in compliance with applicable accounting standards.
Provide important accounting and financial reporting information to the CFO, CEO and Board of Directors.
3. Accounting policies and standards
Develop, maintain and update the company's accounting policies.
Ensure the company complies with GAAP, IFRS and other applicable accounting standards.
Provide professional judgment on complex transactions and major accounting matters.
Evaluate the impact of new accounting standards on the company's business and financial statements.
4. Financial closing
Lead monthly, quarterly and annual financial close efforts.
Establish a standardized checkout process and timeline.
Review significant account balances, accounting adjustments and unusual transactions.
Continuously improve checkout efficiency and financial data quality.
5. Internal controls
Establish and maintain the company's financial and accounting internal control system.
Oversee key financial controls and accounting processes.
Identifies potential control deficiencies and drives corrections.
Support internal audit and related risk management efforts.
6. External audit and supervision
Responsible for communicating with external auditors, accounting firms and regulatory agencies.
Coordinate annual audit and financial reporting related work.
Prepare financial information and related documents required for audit.
Follow up on audit findings and drive problem resolution.
7. Financial reports of listed companies
Responsible for public company financial reporting and related disclosure processes where applicable.
Oversee periodic financial reporting required by regulatory agencies.
Collaborate with investor relations, legal and finance teams to complete disclosure of material financial information.
Ensure that the financial information disclosure process complies with relevant regulatory requirements.
8. Technical Accounting
Responsible for accounting analysis of significant, complex or non-recurring transactions.
Provide technical accounting advice on mergers and acquisitions, financings, equity-based compensation, revenue recognition, leases and other complex transactions.
Prepare or review technical accounting memorandums.
Communicate with external auditors regarding significant accounting judgments.
9. Tax and financial compliance collaboration
Work with the tax team on important tax and accounting related matters.
Ensure accounting records meet tax and regulatory requirements.
Support tax audits, regulatory reviews and other compliance efforts.
Manage accounting and reporting requirements across entities and geographies.
10. Financial system and process optimization
Supervise the construction and optimization of ERP and core accounting systems.
Promote the automation, standardization and digitization of accounting processes.
Improve financial data quality and reporting efficiency.
Establish unified accounting data and reporting standards.
11. Team leadership
Lead accounting, financial reporting, technical accounting and related finance teams.
Establish organizational structure, job responsibilities and performance management system.
Recruit, train and develop senior accounting talents.
Establish a professional and efficient accounting management team.
12. Strategic transaction support
Provide accounting advice on mergers, acquisitions, financings, restructurings and other major business transactions.
Participate in transaction structure analysis and accounting impact assessment.
Collaborate with CFO, legal, tax and business teams.
Ensure that the accounting treatment of major transactions complies with relevant standards.
Job requirements
Bachelor degree or above in accounting, finance, finance or related majors.
Have extensive experience in corporate accounting, financial reporting or senior financial management.
In-depth understanding of GAAP, IFRS and related accounting standards.
Experience in complex accounting matters and technical accounting processing.
Familiar with internal controls, financial audits and regulatory reporting.
Have strong financial analysis, judgment and problem-solving skills.
Possess excellent leadership and cross-department communication skills.
A CPA or equivalent professional qualification is often an important plus.
Public company, multinational or multi-entity management experience is a plus.
