DATA CENTRE ARCHITECT - PORTFOLIO
Reports to: Design Lead - Portfolio
Location: Mumbai - project-site presence and travel as required
Experience: 10-15+ years overall; 5-10+ years in data-center or mission-critical architecture
Role Purpose
Lead the architectural planning and design of data-centre buildings and campuses under the direction of the Design Lead. Own campus master planning, building configuration, data-hall and support-space planning, architectural fit-outs, façades, external appearance, circulation, code compliance and architectural coordination from concept through as-built handover.
Required Outcomes
A coordinated campus master plan supporting phased development, safe operations and future expansion.
Efficient data-centre building layouts integrating data halls, technical spaces, offices, security, logistics and operational support areas.
Compliant, durable and maintainable architectural design, fit-out and external appearance aligned with the approved design intent.
Complete architectural drawings, schedules, specifications, BIM models and authority-submission inputs issued to programme.
Campus master planning and site architecture
Develop campus master-plan options covering building placement, phased expansion, utility and plant reservations, roads, parking, pedestrian movement, security zoning, landscape and future construction segregation.
Coordinate fire-tender access, emergency routes, service yards, loading/unloading, abnormal-load movement, crane access and major-equipment replacement routes.
Plan public, staff, visitor, customer, vendor, logistics and restricted operational zones with clear access hierarchy.
Protect future data halls, utility corridors, expansion zones and live-site interfaces from architectural encroachment.
Data-centre building planning
Plan data halls, network and meet-me rooms, staging and burn-in areas, stores, workshops, technical rooms, corridors, shafts, risers and equipment movement routes.
Coordinate architectural requirements for electrical, UPS/battery, generator, cooling, CDU/FWS, fire, controls, security, NOC/SOC and operations spaces.
Develop room data sheets, area schedules, occupancy criteria, adjacency planning and circulation requirements.
Verify floor-to-floor heights, technical-floor zones, structural grids, plant access, maintenance clearances, openings and replacement paths with engineering disciplines.
Architectural fit-outs and workplace planning
Lead layouts and fit-outs for offices, control rooms, meeting rooms, customer spaces, security areas, welfare, cafeteria, lockers, prayer, rest and support facilities.
Define materials, finishes, ceilings, partitions, raised floors, doors, ironmongery, signage, wayfinding, furniture and accessibility requirements appropriate to each space.
Coordinate acoustic, lighting, ergonomics, durability, cleanability, ESD and security requirements with relevant specialists.
Ensure fit-out details do not compromise fire compartmentation, airflow, equipment access, critical-system routes or future flexibility.
Façade, roof and external appearance
Develop coherent external elevations and campus architectural language appropriate to a high-security mission-critical facility.
Specify façade, roof, louvres, doors, canopies and external materials for weather-tightness, corrosion resistance, maintainability and lifecycle performance.
Coordinate thermal envelope, vapour control, condensation, water ingress, wind, acoustic and plume interfaces with engineering specialists.
Integrate screening of external plant, service yards, tanks, cooling equipment, generators and utility infrastructure without impairing ventilation, access or maintenance.
Compliance, BIM and construction support
Ensure architectural compliance with applicable building, fire, accessibility, development-control and local authority requirements.
Own architectural BIM models and coordination from design development through LOD 300-500 and as-built information, in accordance with project BIM/CDE requirements.
Review architectural shop drawings, material samples, mock-ups, substitutions, RFIs, field changes, snagging and as-built submissions.
Support authority submissions, tender evaluations, constructability reviews, value engineering, DfMA, inspections, commissioning interfaces and handover.
Mandatory Qualifications and Experience
Full-time B.Arch from a recognised institution; M.Arch in Architecture, Urban Design, Sustainable Design or equivalent preferred.
Registration with the Council of Architecture, India, or equivalent professional registration applicable to the candidate’s jurisdiction.
Demonstrable architectural delivery experience on data centres, mission-critical facilities, technology campuses, industrial facilities or similarly complex infrastructure.
Experience leading campus planning, technical-building layouts, fit-outs, façades and construction-stage architectural coordination.
Data-centre experience must include direct coordination with critical MEP, fire, ICT, security, BIM and commissioning teams.
Preferred Certifications
Council of Architecture registration is mandatory where legally applicable.
LEED AP, IGBC AP or equivalent sustainability credential desirable.
BIM/Revit professional certification and familiarity with ISO 19650 principles preferred.
Certified Data Centre Professional or equivalent foundational data-centre credential desirable.
Skills and Leadership Competencies
Strong data-centre space planning and understanding of technical-room, equipment-access and maintainability requirements.
Advanced capability in Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD and common data environment workflows.
Ability to review master plans, code studies, room data sheets, façade details, fit-out packages and multidisciplinary BIM coordination.
Sound judgement on aesthetics, durability, operational practicality, cost and programme.
Clear coordination with the Design Lead, discipline engineers, consultants, contractors, authorities and operations teams.
Candidate Evidence Required
Portfolio showing data-centre or mission-critical master planning, technical-building architecture, fit-outs and façades.
Project schedule identifying built area, facility type, exact personal role, design stages and construction involvement.
Examples of architectural coordination decisions involving equipment routes, fire strategy, envelope, technical spaces or live-campus expansion.
