ABOUT THE JOB

The role focuses on interpreting artworks, reviewing exhibitions, examining artistic approaches, and exploring the ideas, contexts, and cultural questions that shape visual art today.
Working with De Art's editorial team, you will produce independent critical perspectives that help audiences look beyond first impressions and engage more deeply with artworks, artists, exhibitions, and broader developments in visual culture.
The ideal candidate combines visual literacy, analytical thinking, strong writing skills, and a genuine interest in discussing art with clarity, depth, and intellectual openness.
RESPONSIBILITIES

- Develop analytical articles about contemporary artists, artistic practices, movements, and visual culture.
- Examine the conceptual, aesthetic, historical, social, and cultural dimensions of artworks.
- Research artists' backgrounds, exhibition contexts, curatorial approaches, and relevant critical literature.
- Formulate clear, evidence-based arguments supported by close observation and reliable research.
- Develop balanced reviews that distinguish personal interpretation from verifiable information.
- Conduct interviews with artists, curators, critics, and other cultural professionals when appropriate.
- Identify emerging artistic practices and important debates within contemporary visual culture.
- Collaborate with editors to develop article proposals, refine arguments, and maintain consistent editorial standards.
- Write accessible introductions, headlines, captions, and summaries to accompany critical articles.
- Review visual materials and verify artwork details, artist names, exhibition information, and image credits before publication.
- Contribute ideas for themed editorial series, critical essays, and discussions of significant exhibitions.
- Engage constructively with different artistic perspectives while maintaining editorial independence.
- Meet agreed editorial deadlines and revise submissions in response to editorial feedback.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Art History, Fine Arts, Art Criticism, Visual Culture, Cultural Studies, Journalism, or a related field.
- Strong interest in contemporary art and familiarity with different artistic practices and visual media.
- Excellent analytical, interpretive, research, and writing skills.
- Strong English writing and editing abilities.
- Ability to develop original arguments and communicate complex ideas in a clear, engaging manner.
- Understanding of exhibition practices, artistic contexts, and the role of criticism in the art ecosystem.
- Ability to evaluate sources and distinguish factual reporting from interpretation and opinion.
- Openness to different artistic traditions, cultural perspectives, and critical approaches.
- Ability to work independently while responding constructively to editorial feedback.
- Previous experience writing art reviews, critical essays, exhibition texts, cultural journalism, or academic publications is an advantage.
- A portfolio demonstrating critical writing, analytical depth, and a distinctive yet professional voice is highly desirable.
WHAT WE OFFER
- The opportunity to contribute original critical perspectives to an independent digital art platform.
- A platform for publishing thoughtful writing on artists, exhibitions, and contemporary visual culture.
- Opportunities to engage with artists, curators, galleries, and the wider art community.
- Collaboration with editorial and cultural professionals on diverse art-related subjects.
- The opportunity to develop a professional portfolio in art criticism and cultural publishing.
- An interdisciplinary environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, independent thinking, and meaningful cultural discussion.
