About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
THE DATUM PROJECT, developed by Arcedo, is a material study platform designed to make architectural material research more informed, contextual, and practical. DATUM consolidates information on materials across factors such as climate suitability, cost, technical and physical characteristics, durability, sustainability, construction methods, aesthetics, maintenance, availability, and code compliance. By integrating SWOT analysis and other key criteria, the platform supports architects, designers, students, and researchers in making well-grounded material decisions. Rather than evaluating materials in isolation, DATUM focuses on how and where each material performs best, enabling more effective and responsible design choices.
Role Description
The Research and Development Intern will support the ongoing development of THE DATUM PROJECT by conducting systematic research on architectural materials and related technologies. Day-to-day tasks include gathering and analyzing data on material properties, performance, sustainability metrics, and compliance standards, and organizing findings into clear, usable formats for the platform. The intern will collaborate with the project team to refine methodologies, contribute to documentation, and assist in preparing reports or summaries that inform platform updates. This is a part-time remote role, offering flexibility in scheduling while requiring consistent communication and reliable delivery of assigned tasks.
Qualifications
Strong foundation in Research and Development (R&D) and Research, with the ability to design and follow structured research processes.
Demonstrated Analytical Skills for evaluating material data, comparing performance criteria, and integrating information across multiple factors.
Effective Communication skills, including clear written reporting and collaborative communication with a dispersed team.
Basic Laboratory Skills or familiarity with material testing methods, protocols, and data interpretation (academic or project-based experience is acceptable).
Enrollment in or completion of a degree in architecture, materials science, engineering, design, or a related field is beneficial.
Comfort working in a remote, digital environment, with strong time management and self-organization.
Interest in sustainable design, building technologies, and evidence-based decision-making in architecture and construction.
