Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead Scala Developer to drive the design and development of scalable, resilient, and high-performance backend systems. This role combines hands-on Scala development with technical leadership, solution design, code quality ownership, and team mentoring.
The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Scala and functional programming, strong experience with distributed systems, and the ability to guide engineering teams in delivering robust, enterprise-grade applications.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the design, development, and implementation of complex backend applications using Scala.
Define technical architecture and development standards for scalable and maintainable systems.
Drive the adoption of functional programming principles and Scala best practices.
Design and develop distributed systems, microservices, asynchronous services, and event-driven applications.
Provide technical leadership through code reviews, design discussions, and engineering best practices.
Identify and resolve complex technical challenges involving performance, concurrency, reliability, and scalability.
Collaborate with architects, product owners, and cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
Mentor developers, conduct technical knowledge-sharing sessions, and support team members' professional growth.
Own technical deliverables, code quality, and adherence to engineering standards.
Drive automated testing, CI/CD improvements, deployment practices, and production troubleshooting.
Evaluate new tools, frameworks, and technologies to improve application performance and developer productivity.
Participate in Agile planning, estimation, technical discussions, and delivery coordination.
Required Skills and Qualifications
8–12+ years of overall software development experience, including substantial hands-on experience with Scala.
Strong expertise in Scala, functional programming, immutable data structures, pattern matching, and type systems.
Deep understanding of concurrency, asynchronous programming, Futures, and JVM performance.
Proven experience designing and developing scalable distributed systems and microservices.
Strong experience building RESTful APIs and integrating enterprise systems.
Expertise in database design, SQL, query optimization, and data modeling.
Experience with software architecture, design patterns, and engineering best practices.
Proficiency with Scala build tools such as SBT or Maven, Git, and automated testing frameworks.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, and production support.
Demonstrated ability to lead technical discussions, mentor engineers, and review complex code.
Strong problem-solving, communication, stakeholder management, and decision-making skills.
Good to Have
Experience with Apache Spark, Apache Kafka, Akka, or similar distributed processing technologies.
Experience designing event-driven and streaming data architectures.
Knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and infrastructure automation.
Familiarity with observability tools, application monitoring, and performance profiling.
Experience with high-volume, low-latency, or large-scale data-intensive applications.
Experience working in Agile environments and collaborating with globally distributed teams.
