About Emory Healthcare
Emory Healthcare supports professional growth through comprehensive benefits, ongoing mentorship, leadership development, and a supportive work environment. The organization is committed to helping employees build their skills and advance their careers while contributing to patient care and healthcare operations.
About the Role
Emory Healthcare is seeking a Data Scientist to transform clinical and operational data into reliable measures, predictive models, and AI-powered tools that support decisions made by clinicians and organizational leaders. Working closely with physician leaders, operations teams, and finance, this role will address questions involving patient length of stay, physician productivity, disease cohorts, readmissions, patient transfers, and healthcare performance.
The Data Scientist will work with Emory’s Unified Data Platform (UDP), using Epic Clarity and Caboodle data in Microsoft Fabric, SQL, Python/PySpark, R, Power BI, and AI agents. A key part of the role is ensuring that analytical results are accurate, validated against trusted reporting, and clearly explained when definitions or outcomes differ. This is a remote position, with candidates required to reside in one of the approved states.
Key Responsibilities
Build trusted datasets and measures from Epic Clarity and Caboodle data by defining cohorts and metrics with clinical and business stakeholders, developing SQL and PySpark solutions, and validating results against existing reports.
Develop, deploy, and maintain statistical and machine learning models for clinical and operational questions, including length of stay compared with GMLOS, readmission and transfer risk, patient throughput, and productivity.
Move models from initial exploration into scheduled production pipelines in Microsoft Fabric and Azure, with appropriate monitoring and documentation.
Apply natural language processing (NLP) and large language models (LLMs) to pathology reports, radiology reports, and clinical notes to extract structured information.
Create test datasets, evaluate model outputs, and incorporate human review before clinical text results are considered reliable.
Develop Power BI semantic models and reports, along with conversational data agents that allow leaders to ask questions in plain English.
Apply appropriate row-level security to analytical tools and data products.
Protect patient information through minimum-necessary access, de-identification where possible, HIPAA compliance, and adherence to the boundaries between research and quality improvement, including IRB requirements.
Explain analytical results, metric definitions, and limitations clearly to physicians and executives.
Maintain concise, plain-language documentation for analytical work.
Promote reusable code, peer review, versioned metric definitions, and consistent analytical practices.
Mentor analysts and support the development of the broader analytics team and service line operations leaders.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree; a master’s degree is preferred.
At least 5 years of experience in healthcare or data analytics.
At least 2 years of experience working for a payer organization or healthcare system.
At least 2 years of experience working with relational databases.
Proficiency in SQL and at least one additional programming language, such as Python, R, or SAS.
Experience in statistical modeling, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
Excellent presentation and communication skills.
Experience in strategic planning and workflow optimization.
Ability to mentor and coach analysts and service line operations leaders.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Epic data platforms, including Clarity, Caboodle, or Cogito, and related clinical and revenue-cycle concepts such as encounters, DRG, GMLOS, wRVU, orders, and results.
Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric and Azure, including lakehouses, Spark notebooks, Power BI semantic models, DAX, and Azure AI Foundry.
Experience applying NLP or LLMs to pathology reports, radiology reports, or clinical notes, including model evaluation and human-in-the-loop review.
Knowledge of protected health information (PHI) handling and the distinction between quality improvement and research, including IRB requirements.
Experience with healthcare operations metrics such as length of stay, throughput, and productivity, or with oncology and quality-improvement analytics.
Experience developing secure semantic models, reports, and AI-powered data agents.
Familiarity with healthcare research data standards such as OMOP and FHIR, and with IRB processes.
Experience with Git, Agile delivery, and MLOps.
Key Skills
Strong SQL skills for analyzing large healthcare datasets, ideally including Epic data.
Proficiency in Python or R.
A rigorous approach to data validation, including the ability to explain discrepancies between analytical results and established reports.
Ability to communicate findings clearly to physicians and executive stakeholders.
Experience with clinical text NLP or LLMs, including evaluation methods.
Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, or Azure; additional platform knowledge can be developed on the job.
