Position Summary
The Grade Shooter is responsible for measuring, calculating, and establishing elevations, grades, and layout points for construction projects. This position works closely with project supervisors, equipment operators, and crews to ensure grading, excavation, paving, and utility installation activities are completed according to project plans, specifications, and safety requirements. The Grade Shooter utilizes surveying equipment, GPS technology, and construction plans to provide accurate grade information and maintain quality standards throughout the project.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, profiles, and specifications.
Establish and maintain grade stakes, benchmarks, offsets, and control points.
Perform field layout for grading, excavation, utilities, paving, and related construction activities.
Operate surveying equipment, including GPS systems, laser levels, total stations, and automatic levels.
Verify elevations, alignments, slopes, and dimensions throughout the construction process.
Communicate grade information clearly to equipment operators and field crews.
Conduct grade checks and ensure work is performed according to project requirements and tolerances.
Assist superintendents and foremen with project planning and daily field operations.
Document measurements, calculations, and survey data accurately.
Identify and report discrepancies in plans or field conditions.
Ensure compliance with company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
Maintain surveying instruments and equipment in proper working condition.
Qualifications
Education
High school diploma or GED required.
Technical training in surveying, civil construction, engineering technology, or a related field preferred.
Experience
2+ years of experience in construction layout, grading, surveying, or related field preferred.
Experience in heavy civil, road construction, site development, or utility construction strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of construction surveying principles and grade calculations.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
Proficiency with GPS equipment, laser levels, total stations, and related technology.
Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Working knowledge of safety standards and construction best practices.
Physical Requirements
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain.
Frequently stand, bend, kneel, and climb.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime when required.
Working Conditions
Outdoor construction environment.
Exposure to dust, noise, heavy equipment, and changing weather conditions.
Travel between job sites may be required.
Preferred Certifications
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
Surveying or GPS equipment training certifications.
Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
Work Environment
Majority of work will be performed outside in conditions that may be extreme in temperature and condition.
