Junior Backend Node.js Engineer

About the Role
Office Beacon is looking for a Junior Backend Node.js Engineer to help build, maintain, and support backend APIs, services, integrations, and product workflows.
This role is suited to an engineer with strong JavaScript and/or TypeScript fundamentals, practical Node.js backend development experience, and an interest in building reliable and maintainable product features.
You will work with frontend developers, QA engineers, product managers, and other engineers to develop backend functionality, integrate external services, troubleshoot issues, and improve application reliability.
Key Responsibilities
Backend Development
Develop and maintain backend APIs and services using Node.js.
Build REST APIs supporting product features and business workflows.
Implement backend business logic and reusable services.
Structure backend applications using appropriate modules, controllers, services, middleware, and routing.
Write clean, readable, reusable, and maintainable code.
API Development & Integrations
Design and develop reliable REST APIs.
Work with HTTP requests, responses, validation, and error handling.
Integrate third-party APIs and external services.
Support authentication and authorization mechanisms.
Work with APIs using tools such as Postman, Swagger, or Insomnia.
Database Development
Work with databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, or similar technologies.
Create and maintain database schemas and queries.
Use ORM or database tools such as Prisma, Sequelize, TypeORM, Mongoose, or similar.
Assist with query optimization and database-related troubleshooting.
Testing & Debugging
Troubleshoot backend issues and investigate application errors.
Fix bugs and participate in regression testing.
Support unit and integration testing.
Help improve the reliability and quality of backend services.
Security & Authentication
Implement and maintain appropriate authentication and authorization mechanisms.
Work with technologies such as JWT, OAuth, sessions, or role-based access control.
Follow established application security and data-protection practices.
Engineering & Collaboration
Use Git-based workflows for source control and collaboration.
Participate in code reviews and apply feedback.
Collaborate with frontend developers, QA engineers, and product managers.
Communicate technical issues and development progress clearly.
Follow established software development and product engineering practices.
Must-Have Qualifications
1–3 years of professional backend development experience using Node.js.
Strong JavaScript and/or TypeScript fundamentals.
Hands-on experience building and maintaining REST APIs.
Practical experience with at least one Node.js backend framework such as Express.js, NestJS, Fastify, or a similar framework.
Understanding of backend concepts including routing, middleware, controllers, services, request/response handling, validation, and error handling.
Hands-on experience with at least one database such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, or similar.
Familiarity with an ORM or database abstraction tool such as Prisma, Sequelize, TypeORM, Mongoose, or similar.
Experience using API testing/documentation tools such as Postman, Swagger, or Insomnia.
Familiarity with Git and collaborative workflows such as branches and pull requests.
Basic understanding of authentication and authorization, including JWT, OAuth, sessions, or role-based access control.
Ability to troubleshoot backend issues and communicate technical findings clearly.
Understanding of standard software development and product engineering practices.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Redis, queues, background jobs, or scheduled tasks.
Experience integrating services such as Gmail API, Google Calendar API, Stripe, Auth0, or OpenAI APIs.
Experience with Docker and containerized applications.
Exposure to AWS, GCP, Azure, Render, Railway, or similar cloud/deployment platforms.
Experience writing automated tests using Jest, Mocha, Supertest, or similar frameworks.
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines.
Experience working with asynchronous processing and backend job queues.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
