About The Role
The Applications Engineer role offers an exciting opportunity for hands-on engineering professionals to contribute to the development and manufacturing of precision mechanical components. Based in Tewkesbury, this position involves a blend of practical engineering, design, prototyping, and customer interaction. The successful candidate will be instrumental in designing tooling and work-holding solutions, creating prototypes using workshop machinery and 3D printing, and supporting customers through technical assistance and site visits. This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in an innovative environment, enjoy practical problem-solving, and seek to develop expertise within a specialized engineering field serving industries such as Formula 1, space, medical, and automotive.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong fundamental understanding of mechanical engineering principles, demonstrated through practical experience with toolroom equipment such as manual lathes and milling machines. Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, both 2D and 3D, is essential. Basic electrical knowledge, including wiring and circuit diagrams, is also required. Candidates should have a proactive attitude, with the ability to work independently, troubleshoot, and solve design problems. Experience with component prototyping, machining aluminium and mild steel, and familiarity with CAD data for 3D printing will be advantageous. A background in supporting customer projects and working within a manufacturing environment is highly desirable.
Responsibilities
Designing tooling and work-holding fixtures for coil winding bobbins utilizing CAD software, creating detailed engineering drawings.
Fabricating prototype tooling and fixtures using manual workshop machinery such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and hand tools.
Utilizing CAD data to produce temporary tooling and prototypes through in-house 3D printing facilities.
Conducting trials on various materials and sample components, assessing results, and modifying tooling and machine configurations accordingly.
Performing basic electrical work, including swapping controllers and motors, to support machine modifications and improvements.
Evaluating sample components to determine the most effective machine and tooling approach for production.
Running production trials and testing different materials and customer samples to ensure quality and functionality.
Providing technical support to customers, including troubleshooting and site visits when necessary to resolve issues and optimize processes.
