Mainframe Automation Engineer – IBM z/OS and OPS/MVS
Location: New York
Employment Type: Contract
Duration: Initial six-month contract
We are seeking a Senior Mainframe Automation Engineer to support one of the nation’s leading banks. This hands-on position will lead and enhance automation across a large, high-availability IBM z/OS environment.
The engineer will improve automation maturity, operational efficiency, platform resiliency, and disaster-recovery readiness while reducing manual processes across critical mainframe applications and infrastructure.
Key responsibilities:
Develop, enhance, and tune automation using Broadcom OPS/MVS
Configure and support IBM System Automation for z/OS
Automate system startup, shutdown, IPL, message handling, and operational workflows
Support GDPS automation, disaster recovery, resiliency, replication, and failover processes
Develop reliable automation solutions and scripts using REXX
Monitor and troubleshoot environments using NetView
Resolve complex production automation and operational issues
Create technical documentation, operating procedures, and runbooks
Lead automation-modernization initiatives and mentor team members
Partner with z/OS, middleware, application, scheduling, and infrastructure teams
Required experience:
Five to seven or more years of mainframe experience
Deep hands-on expertise with Broadcom OPS/MVS, including rule development, tuning, automation frameworks, and message handling
Strong experience with IBM System Automation for z/OS, including policy configuration and resource automation
Experience with GDPS, disaster recovery, recovery workflows, and failover processes
Strong knowledge of z/OS, IPL processes, JES2/JES3, SYSLOG, WTORs, and system sequencing
Advanced REXX scripting and automation experience
Strong NetView monitoring, integration, and troubleshooting experience
Experience supporting production, non-production, and staging environments
Ability to independently lead technical initiatives and resolve complex production issues
Financial-services and Agile experience are preferred.
