Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site Costume Designer role based in the Greater Bengaluru Area, focused primarily on film and short-film productions.
The Costume Designer will work closely with the director, producer, production designer, cinematographer, hair and makeup team, and other members of the creative department to develop costume concepts that support the film's characters, period, setting, tone, and visual language.
Day-to-day responsibilities include researching visual and historical references, developing character-specific costume concepts, preparing mood boards and costume breakdowns, selecting fabrics, garments, footwear, and accessories, and coordinating garment sourcing, construction, alterations, fittings, and continuity.
The Costume Designer will be responsible for maintaining costume continuity across scenes and shooting days, ensuring that each character's appearance remains consistent with the screenplay and production requirements. The role also involves collaborating with actors during fittings, coordinating with costume vendors and tailors, managing costume budgets and inventories, and ensuring costumes are prepared according to the shooting schedule.
The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of how costume contributes to character development, storytelling, period, atmosphere, and the overall visual language of a film.
Qualifications
Strong Costume Design and Fashion Design skills, with a particular interest in film and cinematic storytelling.
Understanding of how costume communicates character, personality, social background, period, setting, and narrative development.
Ability to translate a screenplay and director's vision into practical and visually distinctive costume designs.
Strong styling skills and an understanding of colour, silhouette, texture, fabric, and visual continuity.
Experience researching cinematic, historical, cultural, or contemporary visual references.
Proficiency in costume sketching, fabric selection, sourcing, and basic garment construction or tailoring principles.
Experience working with directors, producers, production designers, actors, and other film-production departments.
Ability to create character costume breakdowns, mood boards, reference boards, and fitting plans.
Strong understanding of costume continuity across scenes, locations, and shooting days.
Ability to source, organize, maintain, and return costumes, accessories, footwear, and props associated with costume.
Experience coordinating with tailors, costume suppliers, designers, rental houses, and other vendors.
Ability to work within production budgets and manage costume-related expenses responsibly.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work under tight film-production schedules.
Ability to adapt quickly to changes during production while maintaining the director's creative vision.
Relevant education in Fashion Design, Costume Design, Theatre, Film, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Familiarity with digital mood-boarding, presentation, and basic design software is an advantage.
A portfolio demonstrating costume design, styling, character looks, or film-related work is strongly preferred.
Willingness to work on-site in the Greater Bengaluru Area, including evenings, weekends, and extended hours when required by film-production schedules.
