Senior Data Scientist – APS6
RFQ ID: LH-07985 Positions: 2 Contract: 12 months + 2 × 12-month extensions Start: 18 January 2027 Location: QLD, ACT, VIC, NSW, TAS Work arrangement: Hybrid Hours: Up to 37.5 hours/week Clearance: Must be able to obtain Baseline Experience: Senior / APS6 equivalent
The Senior Data Scientist will analyse complex health-related datasets, including Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS), Pharmaceutical Benefits Schedule (PBS) and other data sources, to identify patterns, trends and emerging integrity risks.
The role will develop predictive models, statistical analyses, risk detection methodologies, dashboards and data products to support evidence-based decision making and strengthen the detection, prevention and response to integrity risks across Australia's health payments system.
Key Responsibilities
Analyse complex datasets using statistical, machine learning and exploratory data analysis techniques.
Develop, deploy and maintain predictive models, risk analyses, dashboards and reporting products.
Develop model monitoring and evaluation approaches to ensure model performance and reliability.
Apply data matching, visualisation and contemporary data science techniques.
Translate business requirements into data-driven analytical solutions.
Identify patterns, emerging risks and actionable insights.
Communicate complex analytical findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Work closely with data engineers, analysts, business teams and operational teams.
Perform quality assurance and peer reviews of analytical outputs.
Maintain models, analytical tools, dashboards and supporting documentation.
Provide technical guidance and contribute to team capability development.
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and introduce contemporary data science approaches.
Essential Criteria
Candidates must demonstrate:
Experience with R Shiny, SAS, Power BI and/or Qlik.
Experience programming for AI and Machine Learning.
Experience with Enterprise Data Warehouses (EDW) and cloud environments, preferably GCP.
Strong SQL skills and programming experience in R and/or Python.
Experience delivering professional data science solutions in operational/production environments.
Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including the ability to explain data analysis and insights to non-technical audiences.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Data Science, Machine Learning, Python/R, SQL, predictive analytics, data visualisation and risk analytics, with experience delivering production-ready analytical solutions in complex environments.
Experience with healthcare, government, payments, fraud, compliance, integrity or risk analytics will be highly advantageous.
