About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer, Backend, to join our fully distributed engineering team. In this role, you will be instrumental in scaling and maintaining systems that serve millions of daily users and thousands of amateur sports organizations worldwide. You will be responsible for designing, building, and evolving backend APIs, services, and event-driven workflows that underpin our platform. Your expertise will help improve system reliability, scalability, and performance, ensuring a seamless experience for our users. This position requires a hands-on engineer who can lead complex technical initiatives, mentor junior team members, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams such as infrastructure, platform, and data teams. You will have the opportunity to shape the technical foundation of our product, focusing on backend systems, data performance, observability, and long-term maintainability. Your contributions will directly impact the quality, reliability, and scalability of our platform, supporting our mission to connect the world through sports.
Qualifications
Strong expertise in Node.js and experience building and maintaining production backend systems
Proven track record at a staff or senior engineering level, with experience operating high-scale APIs and distributed systems
Proficiency in backend technologies such as TypeScript, Elixir, Ruby/Rails, Java, Go, or Python
Deep understanding of SQL and relational database management, including query optimization, data modeling, and performance tuning
Experience with service-oriented and event-driven architectures, queues, background jobs, and caching mechanisms
Knowledge of production infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, cloud services, and operational debugging
Ability to lead technical initiatives, influence cross-team collaboration, and communicate complex concepts effectively
Strong ownership mindset with a focus on reliability, scalability, and system observability
Excellent interpersonal skills, including mentoring, giving and receiving feedback, and stakeholder communication
Responsibilities
Architect, develop, and maintain backend APIs, services, event-driven workflows, and data models to support millions of users and organizations
Own complex projects from discovery through implementation, deployment, and ongoing support, ensuring long-term maintainability
Lead ambiguous technical initiatives by breaking down problems, assessing risks, and making practical trade-offs
Enhance system reliability, scalability, and performance through thoughtful architecture, database optimization, caching, and monitoring
Diagnose and resolve complex production issues by analyzing logs, metrics, traces, and system behaviors
Collaborate with product, design, infrastructure, data, and support teams to translate roadmaps into durable backend solutions
Mentor and influence engineering team members, fostering technical growth and best practices
Promote a culture of high-quality code, testing, and operational excellence
