About The Role
We are seeking a talented and dedicated software engineer with a specialization in security and privacy to join our growing product security team. This role is pivotal in enhancing the security posture of Tailscale’s platform by identifying vulnerabilities, implementing security features, and ensuring robust defenses against emerging threats. The ideal candidate will be proactive, collaborative, and comfortable working asynchronously within a distributed team. You will play a crucial role in shaping the security architecture of our products, supporting engineering teams with security expertise, and driving initiatives that make Tailscale safer for all users. At least 50% of your time will be dedicated to hands-on software development, ensuring security is integrated into every aspect of our platform.
Qualifications
Proficiency in developing in at least one programming language, preferably Go
Experience developing for at least one application platform (e.g., iOS, Android, web, Windows, macOS, Linux)
Prior experience in a safety-related technical role such as application security, platform security, penetration testing, threat modeling, or digital forensics
Deep understanding of web application vulnerabilities (e.g., OWASP Top 10), client-side security, and API security flaws
Knowledge of cryptographic primitives and protocols
Understanding of common networking protocols and security best practices
Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering teams, providing security guidance and training
Strong analytical skills with the ability to perform threat modeling and security analysis
Excellent communication skills and the ability to give and receive constructive feedback
Ability to work independently and adapt to a dynamic startup environment
Responsibilities
Identify opportunities to enhance the security and privacy features of Tailscale, including bug fixes and defense-in-depth strategies
Conduct security audits of Tailscale features to uncover technical weaknesses and develop mitigation plans
Support engineering teams in making informed security decisions through threat modeling and security analysis
Implement security improvements across the codebase, dedicating at least 50% of your time to hands-on software development
Promote secure coding practices within the engineering organization and provide targeted security guidance and training
Stay informed about emerging security threats and vulnerabilities relevant to our platform
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and refine security policies and procedures
Participate in incident response activities and digital forensics when necessary
