Role Description The Data Engineering Senior Director role at Orcas Capital is a full-time, remote position responsible for leading the design, development, and governance of the company’s data platforms and pipelines. This role oversees data engineering teams, setting technical standards, defining best practices, and ensuring high-quality delivery across multiple projects. Day-to-day responsibilities include guiding architecture decisions for data warehouses and data lakes, reviewing solution designs and code, and coordinating integration between data systems and core business applications. The Senior Director collaborates closely with analytics, software engineering, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable data solutions that support reporting, compliance, and advanced analytics. This position also involves mentoring team members, managing project roadmaps and budgets, and implementing robust data quality, security, and performance practices.
Qualifications
Candidates should possess strong Engineering Management and Project Management skills to oversee complex data initiatives and deliver results on time and within scope.
Candidates should possess Team Leadership experience, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and building inclusive, high-performing data engineering teams.
Candidates should possess Software Development skills (e.g., Python, Java, or Scala) and deep knowledge of modern data engineering tools and frameworks.
Candidates should possess Integration expertise, including designing and maintaining data pipelines between internal and external systems, APIs, and cloud platforms.
Extensive experience with data warehousing, ETL/ELT, and cloud data platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or GCP) is highly beneficial.
Strong grounding in data modeling, database design (SQL and NoSQL), and data governance, including security, privacy, and compliance, is preferred.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to align technical strategies with business objectives, are important for success in this role.
A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, is recommended.
