About The Role
The Staff Software Engineer - Front End/Back End position is a critical leadership role within our engineering team. As an experienced engineer, you will operate with a high degree of trust, autonomy, and ownership, providing technical guidance and strategic direction for complex software development projects. You will serve as a subject matter expert, influencing architecture, design, and technology choices while ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions. This role involves collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—including product managers, designers, and stakeholders—to translate business needs into effective technical solutions. You will lead technical discussions, review code, mentor junior engineers, and support continuous improvement of engineering practices. The position is remote, offering flexibility and the opportunity to work with federal agencies and other clients to modernize legacy systems, build new capabilities, and support mission-critical initiatives.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
9+ years of software engineering experience, including extensive back-end development
Expert proficiency in Java and Spring Boot for building production-grade applications
Experience designing and developing REST APIs and microservices architectures
Strong understanding of scalable, maintainable, and secure software solutions
Proven ability to provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering teams
Experience with automated testing, code reviews, and modern software engineering practices
Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating technical concepts to diverse audiences
Experience supporting federal government or public-sector projects is a plus
Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership in the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of complex back-end applications and services
Develop and execute technical roadmaps for both new and existing projects with minimal oversight
Lead technical discussions on architecture, system design, API development, and technology selection
Design scalable, reliable, maintainable, and secure technical solutions, clearly communicating architectural decisions and tradeoffs
Build and maintain REST APIs, microservices, and event-driven architectures to support business needs
Collaborate with product, design, engineering, and other teams to translate requirements into technical solutions
Participate in planning sessions, technical discussions, and client meetings to ensure alignment and clarity
Break down complex technical problems, identify constraints, and provide clear technical guidance
Reduce technical debt through documentation, refactoring, automated testing, and process improvements
Establish and uphold engineering standards related to code quality, security, performance, and reliability
Conduct code reviews, provide mentorship, and support the technical growth of team members
Identify technical risks and dependencies, recommending mitigation strategies
Communicate effectively about existing systems, architectural decisions, and project history to stakeholders
Support technical demonstrations, proposals, and client-facing discussions with clarity and expertise
Participate in technical interviews and assist in evaluating engineering candidates
Travel periodically to collaborate with clients and stakeholders as needed
